Ajaccio has been a regional capital of Corsica since 1975 and South Corsica since 1976, preferred by Bastia because of the geographic location to France, unlike Bastia in front of the Italian coast. It is located in the deepest part of the bay, and is primarily known as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. The name comes from the Greek word “Agation” - the harbor, the city, which was founded by Greek colonists. Later it passed under the Roman occupation, and the city became the strengthened Genoese citadel, and was occupied by the French for the first time from 1553 by 1559, then returned to Genoa after the Cateau-Cambrésis armistice. In 1768 it was occupied by the French after the Treaty of Versailles and in 1769 here there was born the most famous citizen of it: Napoleon Bonaparte. From 1793 to 1796 it was a part of the Anglo - Corsican kingdom, and finally returned to France in 1796. It is worth visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the church of San Rocco, the National House - Museum of Bonaparte, the Museum Fesch - a former palace of the 17-th century, where a vast collection of works of art is located, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewelry and items for liturgical use. It is the second most famous collection of Italian paintings in France after the Louvre. Also the Island-Lighthouse Sanguinarie and lighthouse Cittadella are worth attention.
